Pavement Gallery
4th November 2023
Pavement Quarterly, Edition Two, was created by Meg Jones, Elen Lewis, and Lillie Tew. The publication paid homage to the founding location of Pavement—the corner of the Righton Building, formerly a drapery store. The programme began in 2009, with a brief two-year hiatus starting in 2018, before relocating in 2022. Contents include:
‘In Conversation with Peter Funch’ A3 poster and interview transcript by Elen Lewis
‘Horror Vacui and The History of Pavement’ a short essay by Meg Jones
‘twenty four seven’ a visual poem by Lillie Tew
and lastly, a postcard to our audience
The team created a limited run of 200 (free) physical copies that were distributed throughout the Northwest to community groups, galleries, book stores and libraries.
Pavement Quarterly is a publication designed to run parallel to the exhibition programme at Pavement Gallery. It acts as both a physical and contextual expansion of the tiny space, allowing discourse to develop beyond the boundaries of the gallery and the temporal limitations of an exhibition. Taking the gallery programme as a catalyst for curiosity, PQ explores associated ideas through the creative possibilities of language and offers new perspectives on the exhibited works and related thematic concepts. Alongside expanding on the ideas brought forward by the artworks, it also presents a platform for wider inquiry into the window gallery as a site for unconventional curatorial practices.
